GE Model D-12 Toaster.jpg

General Electric Toaster

ca. 1910

This was the first electric toaster sold for the home. Signed “General Electric Model D-12”. It features a white porcelain base and is marked on the bottom with the patent date of Dec. 28, 1909. Note the plug designed to screw into a lighting socket. Despite Edison's well thought-out and detailed plans for electric service, he failed to consider a convenient way for consumers to plug in their appliances!
