Glass Sphere Static Electricity Machine

Replica of ca. 1769 Apparatus

This full-size, faithful reproduction of Joseph Priestley's 1769 machine was built by museum curator John Jenkins. Machines such as these were used by 18th century natural philosophers to study the properties of electricity. Rotating the handle rotates the sphere, creating static electricity. The machine stands about three feet tall, supporting a 10” glass sphere.
